female trouble

recently, i admired a steven meisel story in vogue italia, and drew a misguided connection from it to grey gardens.
the photos were actually a conspicuous reference to igmar bergman's 1966 film, persona, a very different movie, but one that explores a similar theme ~ the complexity of intimate female relationships.

like many films of its obscure genre, persona is challenging subject-wise, but breathtaking from a stylistic perspective.
in that sense, it reminds me of another captivating vision of the challenging dynamics of relationships between women - ranier werner fassbinder's 1972 film, the bitter tears of petra von kant.

like grey gardens, both persona and petra von kant show us shadows of the line between love versus possession. but most importantly, all three tell an unforgettable fashion story!

i've been in bed sick for a few days (guzzling cough syrup the way petra guzzles gin, above), so movies like these have been my aesthetic elixer. i'm feeling better already ~ and inspired to get dressed up again!
