my guy is much more spontaneous than i. for me, going on a trip typically requires a month of planning and packing. he prefers to book the whole thing the night before and just go!

over the years i've had to fashion some flexible tools to be more free-wheeling. i've gotten much better at wandering on a whim, by learning a few fast-packing devices:

1. bring fun clothes, for sure, but make sure to throw in a couple wear-anywhere-with-anything basics as well. for me that includes: a boxy boy's blazer, a polka-dot chiffon skirt, one or two simple belts, and some very versatile necklaces.

2. here's the trick to traveling with gigantic jewels: i wrap each piece in a vintage silk scarf (to prevent tangling or twisting), then stack them side by side in a flat clutch purse. when these packages are unwrapped, your jewels are safe ~ plus you've got an extra bag and some cute scarves to accessorize with on your trip!

3. in the same vein, boxy evening bags, like minaudieres, are great for stashing electronic cords. if you've got to pack that tech stuff anyway, better it be in a pretty package that you can use to dress up your holiday!

4. keep a tote of travel toiletries ready at all times. i use a vintage carpet bag, which can be easily carried to a hotel check-in or roadside restroom. the bag always contains: a week's worth of toothpaste, moisturizers, vitamins, etc... i refill it immediately upon returning home, so it's always ready for the next improvised adventure.

5. finally, make a permanent checklist of all the things you literally can't live without. the more you travel, the more you may tweak it, and eventually, you'll fine-tune it to your own perfect science!
