paris...that kiss...and true love...
If, ' a picture is worth a thousand words' then this must be true of photographer Robert Doisneau's, Le Baiser de L'hotel du Ville. Reproduced millions of time, this kiss in front of the city hall has come to represent so much to those with a penchant for romance. Capturing this intimate moment between two lovers for all eternity is one of the reasons that Robert Doisneau was one of France's most celebrated reportage photographers.
There is something so beautiful yet so mysterious about this shot. When I saw this poster of Doisneau's on the streets of Paris a few weeks back it caught my eye. Not because I haven't seen this image before but because, even in billboard form, it touches. Although the original photograph was staged the couple appear oblivious to the world around them and this suggests a love and a passion for each other that surpasses the every day. The romantic side of me feels true love can be like that; a true, enduring love should overcome the every day and survive even when everything else around us is in tatters.
Paris is as much about true love as the couple in Doisneau's, Kiss. Paris is a city that touches like no other. She is beautiful, beguiling and honest, she is a city that is distant at times and friendly at others. Paris can be moody; she can be as close as can be yet she can be hard to comprehend and impossible to fathom. Nevertheless Paris is a city that is forever constant..... and that is the thing I love about love, xv.
