Mykita & Romain Kremer sunglasses,

I'm not a huge sunglasses person (I only have two or three pairs), but I totally love these collaborations between German eyewear company Mykita, and designers Romain Kremer and Bernhard Willhelm. Each pair is a miraculous construction engineered of a single piece of thin metal. Romain Kremer's sunglasses, which have replaced traditional lenses with metal slats, are modeled after Inuit sunglasses, which were constructed in a similar manner (if you want to see a good example, watch the excellent film, Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner). Bernhard Willhelm opted for a more traditional design, with one round pair and one square pair in a variety of colors for women, and a modern take on aviator glasses for men.

Halloween is coming up, and shockingly, we only have a vague idea of what we want to be, and how we're going to execute it. It doesn't seem half as exciting now that we make outfits and costumes for ourselves on a year-round basis, in addition to the fact that I can no longer look forward to making off with pillowcases stuffed with candy at the end of the night. All I know is that I refuse to dress as a slutty nurse/cop/kittykat/whatever, or do anything that involves wearing fake wings from Ricky's. In spite of the kitchy crap out there, I do always look forward to being able to pick up ghoulish things to wear all year: black lipstick and nailpolish is cheap and plentiful at every drugstore counter, and fake eyelashes are suddenly available in every color and variety imaginable. Still, my favorite creepy item of this season are the blood-dripping sunglasses that Sheefun Chan designed for Ann-Sofie Back's Carrie themed Fall 09 show. Chan, who also designed all the dream catcher jewelry for the collection, made them in both black and red, and I know that I if I had them, I would wear them long past Halloween.

I'm not much of a sunglasses girl. I own a grand total of four pairs, two of which are nice (Chanel and Charles Anastase), and two of which were once janky accessories to Six Six Sick party outfits (heart-shaped Lolita glasses, and a pair of geriatric-style drugstore blue-blockers that I found at the bar at Brooklyn Bowl). Lately though, I've been feeling a conspicuous lack, and last season at Coterie, I put in a personal order for those Alexander Wang cat-eyed sunglasses, which I'm still anxiously awaiting. Apparently I'll have to wait till April, since personals are the last of the order lot to be fulfilled, leaving me with a serious craving for some quality shades. Therefore I pretty much doubled-over with material-lust when I stopped by the Foundation Showroom last week and took a peek at Ksubi's latest collection of eyeware. While the range contains some classic aviator styles, the highlight for me were the bolder styles, like the multi-colored printed Wayfarers, or the translucent sunglasses which looked like their edges had been out-lined with contrasting Sharpie markers. I also love the round glasses that have the cartoonish appearance of half-opened eyes. Maybe I will become a sunglasses girl after all.
