on the road again

i'm touring florida this week for work, which has left little time for blogging but lots of opportunities to think about the challenge of packing perfectly.

whether i'm traveling for business or pleasure, my approach is consistent in a few basic ways.

first of all, i always travel with my best stuff. nothing basic - only blingy / embroidered / patterned / quilted / cashmere / silk / kimonos / caftans / fantasy clothes!

with that understood, i make a list of the different occasions i anticipate: cocktail parties, days at the beach, fashion shows, meetings, dinners, yoga classes, etc... then i attempt to estimate the frequency of each.

next, i put together an outfit for every occasion (including jewelry, shoes, undergarments) plus an "alternate" for each group. since my personal style involves a lot of layering, these looks usually include items that can be mixed with those from other outfits - the outcome being that i almost never wear an ensemble exactly as i planned it at home!

nevertheless the system seems to ensure that i have sufficient, appropriate options to choose from.

i think travel is a great opportunity to indulge your fashion fantasies - you're not living your "normal" day-to-day life, so why dress like it?! dress for adventure, and more often than not, that's what you'll get.

what are the principles of your packing practice?
