what's your favorite thing about living where you do?
if i had to pick one favorite thing, i'd have to vote for the fashion. it's not that new yorkers are inherently more creative or stylish... it's that the city is somehow more formal. there seem to be more occasions to dress up than in many other cities. also, the contrasts between seasons force you to regularly reconsider your entire wardrobe, so your personal style is continually evolving.
when did you start designing jewelry?
i started making little beaded things as a childhood hobby. i would create crystal eyeglass chains for my grandmother, necklaces for my mom, elaborate charm bracelets for myself...
later, when i became a professional designer, i realized i had an especial knack for embroidery and accessories ~ no doubt due in part to my childhood pastime! i started out working for a company that developed specialty beading for international couturiers ~ houses like lanvin and oscar de la renta. in my spare time, i continued making pieces to wear myself, and even as my career became more focused on clothes, jewelry was always my passion.
who are your heroes or muses?
my ultimate style icon is iris apfel. when i saw the 2005 exhibition of her wardrobe at the met, my whole perspective changed. to me she is the absolute best-dressed woman in history. i love the way she could wear the craziest head-to-toe couture, then she'd pile junky flea market jewelry on top of it (with no reverence whatsoever), toss on a pair of too-big spectacles, and just prance around like nothing anyone had ever seen. and yet she was a businesswoman ~ not some bored society lady. she was going to work like that!
