Two Holiday Parties...

The Holiday season has officially begun, and we have plenty of parties and events planned for the upcoming month. Here are the first two, we'll keep you posted as they come!

To start, we'll be partnering with our friend Jessica from The Shiny Squirrel to throw a Holiday party at Anchor Bar this Thursday from 9-1pm, showcasing the spring collections of Miss Lonely Hearts and Julianna Bass. Pieces from both designers will be available for sale, and if you come and say hello, I promise to pour you a drink. Please RSVP at rsvpsixsixsick@gmail.com.

Next Thursday, December 9th we will be DJing for our friends and Triskaidekaphobia stockists, Life: Curated. They will be celebrating the holidays with cocktails, as well as a 20% discount on everything in the store for the night, so it's the perfect time to do some holiday gift shopping. Check out my friends Anton and Maddy, who modeled the holiday collections for the store, on the flier below (uh since you guys are on the invite, you better be there!).

Black Friday and Beyond

While most of the deep Black Friday discounts involve massive chain stores that hold little interest, or highly discounted electronics, which hold even less interest, a couple of alternative Black Friday/holiday deals landed in my inbox that I thought were worth sharing.

My current favorite handbag line, Collina Strada, is giving a 40% discount of everything on her website this weekend if you enter TURKEY40 at checkout. I use my Collina Strada bag all the time, and am considering getting one of her famous backpacks too. I also want to note that they have excellent customer service, and helped me out when my dry cleaner ruined my bag.

Our friends at Convent are holding a one day sale in stores and on line today, discounting everything 40% if you use the code BLACKFRIDAY at checkout. You can pick up stuff from our line, Triskaidekaphobia, as well as pieces from Dusen Dusen and Nakkna.

This is a little advanced notice, but wonder woman Jessica over at The Shiny Squirrel is putting together a Gifts Galore shop-in-shop at International Playground from December 17-19. We'll be selling our jewelry, alongside our friends Chris Habana, Blood is the New Black, and Digby and Iona. We also have a big holiday party planned with Jessica for next Thursday, December 2nd at Anchor Bar---details to come!

Topshop has plenty of holiday plans for their Soho store, including nibbles and giveaways, but of course I'm most excited about their nail art booth. From December 2-4th, Topshop's nail bar will be offering customized nail art from the infamous WAH Nails (see an example from their website below!).

It's a Wonderful World

Last Friday, Christina and I had the pleasure of DJing a party at the Broadway Urban Outfitters celebrating the latest arrivals from the Around the World collections. As I've mentioned before, Around the World brings together some of my favorite labels from across the globe, and on this occasion, fans of the lines got to meet the designers behind Dagmar, Minimarket, The Local Firm, and Rodebjer. Normally, I have to go back to Stockholm to get full access to these lines, so it's really nice and convenient to have them all here in one place. Everyone was given passports to stamp at each designer's booth, which they could later exchange for a treat-filled goodybag, including stuff from Rodebjer, Stila, Nyx and Urban Outfitters. They also enjoyed free manicures by Tracylee, drinks from Izze, and polaroid snaps from The Impossible Project.

I personally was excited to meet some of the designers who I hadn't met before, catch up with old friends who were participating in the event (hi W29!), and eat plenty of the hard-to-find Swedish candy on hand. Of course I couldn't help myself from doing some shopping while I was there, and bought a Stine Goya cape that was on sale from the previous fall collection. Stine, who unfortunately was not on hand for the event, is one of my all time favorites (I even chose to wear one of her dresses to the event), and thanks to Around the World, she's finally available on a large scale in the U.S. market. Now if they could only get the excellent Weekday collaborations in stock, I wouldn't miss Stockholm nearly as much! What do you say Team Urban? Can we work on it?

I wore my Stine Goya dress, DIY Rodarte leggings, Giraffe wedges courtesy of 80%20, Cheap Monday socks, vintage turban, and Triskaidekaphobia matchstick necklace. Photo by Joanne Perez of Pretty Provocative, see her coverage of the event here.

The September Issue Discussion and Signing at Barnes & Nobles

Andre Leon Talley and Anna Wintour in The September Issue

A couple of weeks ago, I was asked to participate in a phone interview with The September Issue director, R.J. Cutler. While I unfortunately didn't get to make the interview, I did receive a preview copy of the DVD, and viewed the film for the first absolutely delightful time. They just don't make enough films about the fashion industry, and when they do come out, you have to savor every moment. And it doesn't get much better than an inside peek at the offices of American Vogue. It's always refreshing to see a real portrayal of the fashion industry, which inevitably entails plenty of unglamorous work, petty bickering, warring egos, frazzled assistants, ridiculous fashion-speak, etcetera.

While Anna Wintour does deliver moments of the cruelty she is famous for (watching her jovially tell the film's cameraman that he needs to hit the gym while pointing to a photo of his puffy stomach is particularly wince-worthy), Cutler also manages to show Wintour in a relatively human light. Many of these moments are captured in the Bonus Feature material of the DVD, and there's a particular poignant clip of Wintour speaking at Isabella Blow's memorial service in London. Grace Coddington is particularly mesmerizing to watch, and Andre Leon Talley delivers plenty of quotable quotes and much-needed humor. Each editor is a fascinating character study in themselves, and it is a treat to watch the deleted footage that focuses on them (although the the boring boardroom meetings might be unnecessary).

The DVD is available today, and if you are in New York, Director R.J. Cutler, Grace Coddington, and Andre Leon Talley will be having a discussion and signing at the Union Square Barnes & Nobles this Thursday at 4pm. I know I will definitely try to make it.

Blickfang 2009

Blickfang, which means eye-catcher in English, is a fair for designers from all sorts of areas like furniture, fashion, jewellery and home accessories. It's already running for the 13th year and depending on the location, there are about 150 - 220 Designers every year. They show innovative design and unique ideas apart the mass production, surely a good place to get inspired or buy interesting stuff you don't find at every corner.
It was my first time at Blickfang this year, so I was looking forward to see how it is. A very important thing for a designer at such a fair is to have an interesting and eye-catching stand, so people actually stop and have a look at your things. I made several rounds and photographed the most interesting stands and products to present a little selection to you.

Townhouse, as some of you might remember my previous blog entry, is a concept store from Zurich and of course didn't miss the chance to be there as well.

Elf Elf is a Swiss label by Beat Huwyler, that produces simple and refined furnitures. The stand made me stop because it was all kept in black and white with the dishes being black contrary to the usual porcelain.

Superform is another producer of high-quality furniture. This is one of their racks with brackets, that can be put in individually and get the function of bookends.

Buttoneyes are little creatures made out of different fabrics and buttons. I liked the framed ones the best but you can buy them also seperately.

Fretsche takes recycling bicycles to another level. He collects old bicycles, deconstructs them, and uses the different parts to create a new one. All handmade of course.

QLOCKTWO by Biegert & Funk Product is a clock in square format, that shows time in a new and unique way. Get more infos about the product here.

Me Plus One

Annie wearing a Jean Charles de Castelbajac dress

This Saturday, I'm spending the entire day in Soho/TriBeCa, and I encourage you to do the same. I'm starting the afternoon at theSeven x Bblessing x OAK sample sale, before heading to Topshop to DJ, and then finishing the night at TriBeCa Grand, where one of my favorite pop singers, Annie, will be our special guest DJ for the night. Annie's performed and DJed many times at TriBeCa before, and she's always incredible; you can't help but falling for catchy music and her adorable style. Boy Crisis will also be performing live. Hope you can make it, just cut the line and say Six Six Sick at the door to get in!

Total Knockout

Caged pearl rings

Last week, Jules Kim presented her latest addition to the Bijules collection, "The Seize Kind," a group of incredibly sensual, pearl-based baubles that are meant to celebrate the sea's precious harvest, as well as the feminine organism that shapes it. Jules always knows how to put on a good show, and the delicate gems were passed around the rooftop of The Gramercy Park Hotel by Big Gunz, an underground boxing club that's members happen to be male models. One of the hunky presenters described the club as "a cross between Zoolander and Fight Club," and if that doesn't pique your interest enough, I suggest you read this article from the latest issue of New York Magazine. Working their way through the throngs wearing a single 18k gold and pearl teardrop adhered to their faces, the boxers stirred up quite a frenzy, and it was difficult to edge out other members of the gawking audience for a peek at the beautiful jewels. Luckily I work with Jules doing her wholesale sales, so I will get plenty of closer looks on my own, but here are a few shots I took at the show, and today at Capsule. If you are in New York, and would like to see the new collection yourself, you should stop by Boutique. Eat. Shop. (559 w. 22nd St) from 7-10 tomorrow, where Bijules will be having a sale, and where pieces from The Seize Kind will be available for pre-order!

Margarita Saplala Fall 2011

Fashion Week has been a blur, and I have plenty of updates and photos to post over the next couple of weeks. I'm sure that everyone who has participated is somewhat relieved that it will be over tomorrow, and we're celebrating with a party at Anchor Bar for our friend Margarita Saplala, and her Fall 2011 collection. Please join us from 10-2 for some drinks and a peek at the new collection, and a tiny break before those of us who work in sales have to start work at all of the trade shows!

yc: ying chu Spring 11 Preview Party

Starting this Thursday at Anchor Bar (330 Spring St.) from 11-3pm, Christina and I will be launching a new bi-weekly party featuring our favorite local designers and stores, including many of the talented people who have been featured on this blog. For our first night, we will be holding a Spring preview party for our friend Ying Chu, who I wrote about earlier this month. Our hope is to promote local and emerging talent, and if you have any suggestions for designers who would be a good fit, send them over! If you are in New York, I hope you can join us, and take a look at the pieces from his Spring collection in person. There will be drink specials, and if you introduce yourself to me, I'll make you a drink too!

Swiss Textiles Award 2009

Nominate six young upcoming designers, invite them to Zurich to present their upcoming collection on the runway and choose one winner in the end, that gets the Swiss Textiles Award and 100'000 Euros prize money – that's what the Stella Contemporary Fashion Award 2009 was all about in short. Marking already its 10th anniversary, they also invited all the past winners from previous years and gave Rodarte the opportunity to once again show their upcoming collection on the runway. Previous winners are Rodarte (USA), Marios Schwab (GB), Bruno Pieters (BE), Christian Wijnants (BE), Haider Ackermann (BE), Raf Simons (BE), Benoît Missolin (FR), Tran Hin Phu (CH), Daniel Herman (CH). Such an event to be happening in Switzerland is quite remarkable, since the fashion industry is very little compared to other parts of the world. The winner of the Swiss Textiles Award was chosen by an international jury with people working for l'Officiel France, Vogue.com UK, i-D Magazine, Annabelle and others, which of course all attended the event as well.
This year's finalists were: Erdem (UK), Alexis Mabille (F), Ohne Titel (USA), Thakoon Panichgul (USA), Peter Pilotto (UK) and Alexander Wang (USA). In the end, there was no big surprise when they announced Alexander Wang as this year's winner.

Alexander Wang as the lucky winner

Choosing Wang as this year's winner was a pretty obvious choice and there's nothing wrong with that since he's doing a really great job – yet I would have appreciated it if they had chosen another designer like Thakoon or Mabille, which I liked a lot as well. While for other young designers the prize money would be a significant financial aid, it's probably just the cherry on top of the cake for Wang, who's already on top of his game at such an early stage of his career and age. Who would have been your choice?
