Two Holiday Parties...

The Holiday season has officially begun, and we have plenty of parties and events planned for the upcoming month. Here are the first two, we'll keep you posted as they come!

To start, we'll be partnering with our friend Jessica from The Shiny Squirrel to throw a Holiday party at Anchor Bar this Thursday from 9-1pm, showcasing the spring collections of Miss Lonely Hearts and Julianna Bass. Pieces from both designers will be available for sale, and if you come and say hello, I promise to pour you a drink. Please RSVP at rsvpsixsixsick@gmail.com.

Next Thursday, December 9th we will be DJing for our friends and Triskaidekaphobia stockists, Life: Curated. They will be celebrating the holidays with cocktails, as well as a 20% discount on everything in the store for the night, so it's the perfect time to do some holiday gift shopping. Check out my friends Anton and Maddy, who modeled the holiday collections for the store, on the flier below (uh since you guys are on the invite, you better be there!).

Meet The Sweet Ones: The L.E.S.'s Best Vintage Store

Alyssa Pallett, owner of The Sweet Ones, models an antique silk dressing gown that already has the interest of Courtney Love

I know I've exhibited shameless bias towards the achievements of my friends in many previous blog posts. Still, objectively speaking, the new store that my friend Alyssa Pallett opened just one week ago is the best vintage shop I've seen yet in the boutique overrun neighborhood of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Dubbed The Sweet Ones (EDIT: located at 132 Allen St. between Rivington and Delancey), Alyssa managed to fill the store in one month (!!!) with a treasure trove of goodies that would satisfy both vintage junkies and label whores alike. Alyssa culls her collection from a wide variety of sources (including her own enviable closet), to create a rare selection that dates back to Victorian era jackets, and then covers every era up to last season's Alaia. Highlights include a mint condition vintage Geoffrey Beene dress, a hot pink 80's era Theirry Mugler suit, a never-produced headpiece made for an Adolfo runway show, and last season's Mary Poppins inspired Marc Jacobs dresses.

Born out of Alyssa's love for constantly buying clothing, The Sweet Ones reflects her wealth of sartorial knowledge, and downright fashion nerdyness. The cozy store is expertly curated, and Alyssa can tell you about the designer if you are not familiar with them (although I did get to school her on one of my 90's favorites, Voyage!). Alyssa's warm Canadian cheer adds to the homey environment, which is perfect for sitting and hanging out, or better yet, a wild game of dress up.

While the treasures are too numerous to name, I've compiled pictures of a small selection of my favorite pieces. Still, none of these photographs does justice to the texture and the weight of most of these pieces, which are incredibly heavy and luxe. Prices aren't cheap, but they're incredibly reasonable for what you're getting. The best deal? The white Alaia dress I tried on, which is priced under $500. An almost identical version in black is currently hanging on the Alaia racks at Barneys for full price, which is way over $4,000. If you are in the New York area, make sure to stop by and take a look for yourself. And don't forget to tell her who sent you!

One of the best deals (I'm seriously tempted): a structural wool Prada coat priced at $365

A gorgeous velvet burn-out wedding dress

A Victorian jacket with full mutton sleeves!

Just a tiny selection of the shoes. I'm particularly crazy about this pair of hot pink Louboutins.

A frilly mannequin dressed to match the print hanging on the wall

Alyssa wearing a 20's coat and a vintage fur Christian Dior hat

I tried on this Alaia dress, which is almost identical to the current Alaia dresses hanging at Barney's for over ten times the price. I'm standing in front of my favorite rack in the store, where the oldest and most delicate pieces hang.

Alyssa showing off a velvet Norma Kamali jacket

A customer walked in looking for a fur muff, and Alyssa immediately took the suggestion to heart and found this gigantic one for the store

It's difficult to tell from this picture, but this is a floor length skirt that it completely covered in studs

Alyssa shows off a pair of Givenchy thigh high boots with laces up the back

The super cozy interior, perfect for hours of trying on clothes!

EDIT: Here is the mint condition Geoffrey Beene dress that I forgot to include

Meet and Greet

Even though I'm going to try my best to keep everything up to date, there might be a slight slow down in posting due to fashion week. I actually have come to realize that I have a limit to how many shows I can attend, and really can't handle any more than six or seven per day. I don't know how other people do it, in the dead of winter, wearing high high heels and ridiculous outfits. It might sound silly, but you have to have a certain amount of athletic endurance to run between shows spread far and wide across town while lugging weighty amounts of crap everywhere. Either that or the personal wealth/stature to hire a driver to chauffeur you from place to place. Obviously I have none of these things.

Anyway, before I start posting photos from the shows, I would like to invite all of you New Yorkers to a very special event that we're DJing at Urban Outfitters next Friday, once all the craziness has died down. As you know, U.O.'s Around the World series is a favorite of mine, bringing together some of my favorite emerging designers from Scandinavia and the rest of the world. For the first time ever, you will also be able to meet all of these designers in one place too, and from 4-8pm there will be a designer meet and greet at U.O.'s Soho location. Visiting designers include our friend Carin of Rodebjer as well as Carin Wester, Stolen Girlfriends Club, Minimarket, The Local Firm, Stine Goya, House of Dagmar, Wood Wood, Madras by A.P.C., and Le Mont St. Michel. Make sure to RSVP--everyone on the guestlist will get 20% off merchandise during the event! See you there!

My Funny Valentine

Christina and I with our jewelry. I wore a vintage turban and jacket from Screaming Mimi's and an Alexander Wang Dress, and Christina wore a tee and crinoline from Screaming Mimi's.

I know NYFW is in full swing, and I already feel hungover and beat, so I really have to give a big thank you to everyone who took time out of their crazy schedules and stopped by our Triskaidekaphobia Valentines Day Party at Screaming Mimi's last night. I hope you all got their fill of Kumquat Cupcakes and pink champagne, and had a chance to sit down with Michael a.k.a. One Line to Live for a palm reading. Although I've been waiting for what seems like years to get my palm read by him, his table was understandably mobbed the entire night, and alas I'll have to wait for my turn another time. If you didn't make it last night, make sure to stop by the store, all the jewelry will be up for the rest of the month. Here are a few photos I took of the evening, check out the rest on the Mimi's blog.

They don't love you like I love you

Valentines Day receives mixed reactions from those in love and those looking for it, but no matter how you feel about the holiday, I hope you will come out and take a peek at our Triskaidekaphobia Strange Love collection at Screaming Mimi's this Wednesday from 6-9. Pick up some jewelry for your bestie or beloved (or just for yourself), while enjoying cocktails, mini-cupcakes from Kumquat Cupcakery, and complementary palm reading from our friend Michael a.k.a. One Line To Live. Music will be provided by three handsome roommates heartbreakers, Jacob of The Drums, Waseem, and Caleb--just don't forget to RSVP to press@screamingmimis.com to get your xoxo's. To get you in the mood, I've put together a list of a few of my favorite (strange) love songs. Remember, love is like a bottle of gin, but a bottle of gin is not like love.

Screamin' Jay Hawkins- I Put a Spell On You

Magnetic Fields- Love is Like a Bottle of Gin

Yeah Yeah Yeahs- Maps

Built to Spill- Else

Arcade Fire- Cars and Telephones

The Park

This Henry Pollack wool bubble hat looks like a costume piece straight of Holy Mountain (which is an excellent source of Halloween costume inspiration, by the way)

Curse me for being so damn lazy, cause I still haven't managed to get myself out to Brooklyn to check out Lacasa Park, a vintage boutique and hair salon in Clinton Hill. The store specializes in rare designer vintage clothes, and their online shop showcases plenty of Martine Sitbon, Jean Paul Gautier, and Gucci. The highlight for me, however, isn't the clothes, but the accessories. Somehow Jaehee Park, who buys for the store during her travels, has managed to unearth the craziest and most eccentric treasure trove of hats that would even delight the likes of millinery connoisseur Isabel Blow (R.I.P.). I'm always a sucker for a crazy hat, and this bunch puts my collection to shame. Maybe it's time I pay a visit to The Park.

This wool felt hat with ostrich feathers is the cutest of the bunch
I love the sculptural look of this basket-weave bonnet

Ok, so this peacock feather hat shaped like a duck butt would definitely get points and stares in the street, but that hasn't stopped me before

I kinda love how this hat is shaped like a citrus juicer

Around and Around

DIY knit sweater, vintage Gunne Sax dress that I adjusted myself, Marc Jacobs heels, Devaki hat, H&M tights, Triskaidekaphobia necklace and earring. All photographs by David Carlo.

Yesterday night, I had the pleasure of hosting a party at vintage mecca, What Goes Around Comes Around, with Elizabeth of White Lightning, and Leandra of The Man Repeller. I dressed in vintage for the occasion, wearing a 70's prairie revival dress by Gunne Sax that I had picked up after scouring eBay. Leandra directed the photographer to take a picture of me, and explained,"I'm going to write about Chronic Man Repellers" and then aside, "I hope that's not offensive." Thankfully I'm married, so I no longer care about grossly offending the opposite sex (not that I cared much before I was married either), and I am always happy to be surrounded by my own kind (you can see the list of fellow Man Repellers here). As you know, female fashion freaks/repellers tend to attract fellow repellers, and I definitely thought there were plenty of stunning looks in the house.

Anyway, thank you to everyone who stopped by last night and had a drink with me. I know I had a few too many, cause I ended up having nightmares about being attacked by the ghosts of invisible jellyfish, which seeped through the walls and could only be seen under black light. If you didn't make it, you should swing by the store soon (351 West Broadway), as all of the fall collection is on sale for 70% off!

Paris, Je T'Aime

At the Centre Pompidou. Jacket designed by my Mom, Something Else by Nathalie Wood dress, Laura Mackness x Weekdays leggings, Carin Wester scarf, Cheap Monday socks, Dieppa Restrepo brogues, Triskaidekaphobia gear necklace.

Last week I went on a quick trip to Paris with my Mom, who had to go there for a business meeting with the architect Renzo Piano. I spent a semester living in France while I was in college, so I've already done all of the sightseeing, and decided to concentrate my energy on consuming as many of my favorite French confections as I could. I basically spent my entire time there snacking at my favorite sweet spots: Pierre Hermé and Ladurée for macaroons, Jean-Paul Hévin for pâtisseries, Angelina's for hot chocolate, and Mariage Frères for tea and scones. Most of these things unfortunately don't travel well, or don't have a long shelf life and must be consumed almost immediately, which was all the excuse I needed for stuffing myself until I almost collapsed from sugar-shock.

I also made some time between sweets to meet up with my bestie, Brandon, who chunneled in from London for some window shopping (very little actual shopping was done, as the euro is still trouncing the dollar). Brandon is much better at taking photographs than I am, and you will probably see plenty more pictures on his blog, Feigned Perfection. Our first stop was the semi-hidden boutique, L'Eclaireur, which might be the most incredible looking store I've ever entered, complete with hidden dressing rooms, secret doors, and walls that lift up with a push of a button to reveal racks of Junya and Balenciaga. Unfortunately, they don't allow photographs, but they have plenty of videos on their online shop. Next up, we stopped by interior design and lifestyle store Merci, which wouldn't be out of place in Park Slope, and had every single item necessary for constructing a perfect Parisian apartment. Our final shopping stop was Damir Doma, where we were initially locked outside, before getting locked half inside, until Damir dropped by and let us into the store.

Now I'm back home in New York, where my waistline could use a break from my exorbitant sugar/butter/bread intake. Hope to be getting back to Paris soon for more hazelnut truffle macaroons at Pierre Hermé.

Tricks and Treats

Vintage faux-fur coat, headpiece, and fur boots, all from Screaming Mimi's.

Halloween is around the corner, and it always involves two of my favorite things: dressing up, and eating a ton of sweets. Yesterday night I stopped by Screaming Mimi's to hang out with all my favorite girls, and to celebrate their biggest season with a little dress-up party. If you have no clue what you want to be for Halloween yet, I suggest you stop by the store ASAP for some instant costume inspiration. You'll be overwhelmed with ideas, and as an added bonus, one of the gorgeous Mimi's girls will help you complete your outfit.

When I walked in the store I immediately fell in love with the gigantic fur Viking helmets that were on display, and decided to go for a prehistoric ice-woman look, partially inspired by the Chanel Fall 2010 show. I grabbed the largest, hairiest faux-fur coat on hand, and Nicollette found me a pair of vintage fur boots to complete the outfit. I had to take off the hat after a few minutes, cause it's ridiculously warm, but I stuck around to see everyone else's outfits--you can see them all on the Screaming Mimi's blog.

At the end of the night, Laura gave me the sweetest trick-or-treat bag filled with Jacques Torres chocolates!

As if my week couldn't get any sweeter, I also stopped by The Little Cupcake Bakeshop, which just opened on 30 Prince Street, for a tasting of some of their new cupcake flavors. My friend Jonathan and I worked our way through four different flavors: Cotton Candy, Tiramisu, Blue Velvet, and Pumpkin Spice, paired with giant Illy cappuccinos. All were exceedingly moist and we were both surprised by which flavors we ended up liking. I'm not much of a fan of tiramisu as a dessert because of its strange texture, but I actually found it quite tasty in cupcake form. I think we both decided that the fall-appropriate pumpkin cupcake was our favorite, even though we were both in sugar shock by the time we tasted it. The shop is the first carbon neutral bakery in New York, and is family-run in the truest sense--both shops are owned and operated by the four LoBuglio brothers, who also get help from their large extended family. I will definitely be back, as soon as I've fully recovered from the copious amount of sweets I've consumed this month.
