{ costume of the day } snow leopard

the last few days have been a frantic flurry of getting ready to leave new york for the holiday season: finishing jewelry orders, shipping gifts, and tying up a year's worth of loose ends. the payoff for this mania will be nearly three lovely weeks off ~ during which i'll be checking in from texas, new mexico, and who knows where else along the way?

anyway, i've got to finish packing now {warmer weather wear, yay!}, but here's what i've been wearing nearly every day for the last week:

vintage sunnies, coat, belt & gloves; h+m tights; coach boots

{ vintage wishlist }

the downside of hosting a giveaway via a vintage shop is that i can't resist shopping for myself! here are a few items that if you don't buy, i most certainly will. it's such a shame i'm not eligible to win my own reward.

clockwise from top left: superb 60's leopard coat; haute hand-painted circle skirt; a chic day-to-night holiday party-perfect dress; cool caftan almost identical to the one i wore here

**update**
crafty crow just announced that everyone who enters 'theglamourai' at checkout will receive 10% back on their purchase! now you'll really have to fight me for that spotted topper!!

{ costume of the day } la dolce vita

i love living in new york because here i can wear whatever wackery i want. moreover, there are many merchants hungry to hawk it to me.

and yet, when it comes to true treasure hunting, the big city's not really the best place to forage. in pursuit of seriously special statements, small towns just can't be beat.

this weekend ~ as we often do ~ the glamourguy and i motored off for an antiquing expedition upstate. i knew it was worth the drive the moment i met this faux fur leopard skirt, sitting in some small town consignment shop, sized precisely to my measurements. even better, it was a bargain!

combined with an old gold-woven shirt found in texas, plus an ellen tracy belt from another new york vintage adventure, and i've got not just an outfit, but some really remarkable memories.

wearing: d+g sunnies, DIY cardigan, vintage blouse, belt + skirt, the glamourai rings, bebe booties

{ costume of the day } spiffy spots

today's to-do list measures miles long, so i'm dressed casually ~ for comfort and economy. nothing can slow me down! nevertheless, so it doesn't feel like all work and no play, i slid on a set of spotted tights to spiff up the spirit:

wearing: erica weiner cicada earrings, my glamour-guy's scarf, self-designed cast crown neckplate, h+m top, antique & copperhead double knuckle rings, 12by12 pants, h+m tights, calvin klein collection shoes

{ costume of the day } tiger eyes

yesterday, i prowled around town in this leopard-spotted, dolman-sleeve dynasty dress. to me, animal prints are totally classic, yet i admit when i bought this piece it screamed 80s! (or did it roar?)

i did my best to bring it to 'today' by removing the shoulder pads (sometimes they work, but not with this print), and taking the ruffly skirt length up by half. this was an easy feat thanks to the low hip seam - i merely folded the hem under and basted it to this seam by hand. i quite like the way the excess fabric, now hidden inside, adds a tad more volume to the silhouette of the dress.

i also nixed the matching leopard belt for a more modern option, and kept the rest of my accessories fairly streamlined. if anything, simple accessorizing may be the trick to pulling off more outre vintage fashions. then again, what do i know about simplicity?!?

custom sunnies, self-designed earrings + bracelet, vintage joseph ribkoff dress, h+m belt, melie bianco bag, kenneth cole clogs

absolutely tragulous

remember the olden days - before you could wake up, throw on an outfit, photograph it, upload, and parade it across the world wide internets, all before lunch?

remember when photos were made on real film? in black and white? when it took weeks to fill up a roll, and days to have it processed? back when things were made to last?!?!?!!

behold, the ancient (almost a month old!), just developed, only surviving evidence of the one and only time i wore those bebe shoes:

loving leopard print, with my friend sweet marie

let me say first, that i was so excited about them. i thought they would revolutionize my wardrobe. naturally then, for their maiden voyage, i wore them on a day packed with places to go and people to see. as you've already guessed, things did not go according to plan.

the trouble began as i was marching midday down 7th avenue. a man behind me said, "how can you walk in those things?" and woosh! i catapulted off my feet and into his arms.

of course, i blamed him for distracting me, and sulked away. but it had become clear that my ankles weren't exactly well-supported, and i was teetering several inches off the ground.

i spent the rest of the afternoon walking much more slowly than usual. late day, i met two friends at an art opening in the lower east side:

from there, we decided to head to a fashion party in soho. as we pranced happily across houston street (only the busiest thoroughfare in all of manhattan), my heel hit a pothole. next thing i know, i'm sprawled face first in the middle of the road, and the traffic light's just turned green!!!

before i could become very colorful roadkill, my friends scooped me up and hightailed to the sidewalk, where i humbly collected my bruised, bleeding limbs. my left baby toe had already swollen to the size of the big one, but my shoes fared even worse. the glued-on side details (all that raffia and "leather" i thought i loved) had been ripped clean off - shredded, in fact.

days later, when i mustered the nerve to take them to my cobbler for repair, he literally laughed in my face. his exact words? "if any part of these were actually made of real leather, i might be able to help you. hahahahaha!!!"

then and there, i swore never to buy cheap shoes again (and they weren't even that inexpensive!). there are many ways we pay for fashion. try not to let your body be one of them.

First leopard

Parmi les tendances que je détestais ouvertement, l'imprimé léopard, auquel je collais une étiquette extravagante, s'est finalement et doucement immiscé dans ma it-liste cet été.

Although leopard print was part of the trends I used to hate, it is now one of the fashion details I take an interest in.

are you there vogue? { it's me, glamourai }

i've already confessed a longing for lanvin's pre-fall look, and now it seems that vogue is intent on magnifying my malcontent.

just as i'm getting excited to wear less layers in the coming summer months, they have to serve up this swanky souffle:

(david sims for us vogue, may 2009)

leopard-print gloves! embroidered gauze and gold crushed-velvet! beaded grosgrain jabot! bejeweled satin shoes!

it's only like, my ideal outfit. they even got the hair right!!!
this should be my costume every day.

stylesightings

the morning after the sprouse/vuitton party, i ran into eddie from stylesightings, a blog i read daily for his combination of beautiful streetstyle portraits + always witty headlines!

we made a few photos together, and i'm very honored that he's featured them today in the last glamourai! thanks eddie!!!

{ costume of the day } bundled up

today, bunny and i had a lunch date with our pal jessica, from what i wore. jess was kind enough to snap a quick pic, so the wee one could show off her new fleece-lined, herringbone coat:

{wearing: gap hat, vintage emanuelle khanh sunnies, vintage coat [it's the same one i wore HERE], gaultier tie-front blouse, aldo driving gloves, j brand jeans / bunny wears: ruffluv coat}

i just knew she'd be into fashion! as for me, it's still really, really cold, so thick pants, gloves, and a woolly beanie are sort of de rigueur. bunnybear is so lucky to have a built-in fur crust!

style symmetry

yesterday morning, i woke up feeling a bit wonky, like real life had returned from the holidays too fast and left me spinning, so i sought refuge in a few favorite fashion talisman: a sort of dr. suess cap, comfy leopard chubby, gothic crucifixes, and charlie - brown stripes:

scoop dress (worn as a blouse), vintage skirt & coat, self-designed hat & necklaces

by night my mood had reversed, and so had my motifs. i swapped the spotted outer for a slinky leopard under, and slid out the stripes from bottom to topper:

reworked vintage dress + jacket, self-designed necklace, vintage bag, patricia field boots

i commonly go through many outfits (and moodswings) in a day, but this particular sartorial switcheroo was to appropriately attend the launch party for a stephen sprouse (the punk glamour god!) exhibit at deitch projects in nyc, hosted by louis vuitton. for a fun event like this, celebrating a designer like sprouse, i figured there was no way to wear too much pattern!

arriving at the gallery, the first look to catch my eye was a wild acid-stripe dress, worn with a wonderfully overdosed crucifix charm necklace - the phsychedelic version (vision?) of my own costumes of the day:

it seemed that silly skins + shiny stripes was a mini-trend-of-the-moment, and i couldn't have been happier!

it was glammy good fun, but the toniest tiger of all was the intrepid debbie harry -blondie! - the eternal vixen and stephen sprouse muse, who performed the after party. by the end of the day, life seemed pretty grrreat!
